Considering and upgrade, wondering about my CPU

#1AcdcfantonyPosted 10/28/2013 7:25:40 AM
I have a i5-2500k running on a 4.5Ghz overclock. My current GPU is a 560ti. I was planning on getting a PS4 and keeping my current PC setup but now I'm leaning more towards upgrading my GPU instead. I'm currently considering the R9 280x. Basically, I'm wondering how well my CPU would do with games like BF4, which i'm assuming is very CPU intensive. Is the i5-2500k still suitable to get 60+ FPS in recent games?

You'd see a better improvement in 90% of games if you upgraded your GPU. You would have to spend a pretty good amount of money to see any noticeable improvement over your current CPU, which is strong and you have a very nice overclock on.

Going up to Haswell would only give somewhere around 10-20% extra performance, but at quite a cost. In addition, most games don't even take advantage of what you have now.

You would be wasting your money to upgrade your cpu at this time unless you were specifically interested in doing something that benefits from hyper threading. Neither Ivy nor Haswell were truly focused on making performance jumps along the lines of nehalem to sandy. In terms of noticeable differences, their really aren't any.

As has been said, you're totally fine with the 2500k, especially at 4,5 ghz.

If BF4 is the main reason for upgrading your graphics card, remember that BF4 will get support for Mantle in December. Mantle is AMD's own low-level API and will increase both CPU and GPU performance if you have a HD 7000 GPU or above

That's the reason for me going with AMD. I'm normally a Nvidia fanboy.
