7950 or 7970 if you can find a good sale. Those two also come with 3 gbs of Vram so it will come in handy later down the road of if you start modding.

That's gonna be a pretty big bottleneck for both of you, especially your son.

see this is why im glad you're here. i have no knowledge on AMD CPUs, quite frankly they look extremely confusing , but i can also understand a AMD user's pov of intel if i3-i5-i7 and 2nd-3rd-4th gen was confusing.

Would overclocking be something to look into, or would it not make enough of a difference to mess with?
