Installing a new SSD as a boot drive.

#1XxTwisted26xXPosted 10/29/2013 7:12:46 PM
Hey guys,, I just recieved my new 120GB SSD Kingston Hyper X. I want to use it as a boot drive, with my current HDD as something for all my backlog games. However, I was wondering how I proceed to do this? Like I was wondering if you can transfer the OS from the hard drive to the SSD?

I DID check online and all the posts im reading on Toms Hardware say that they backup their files to an external and wipe the hard drive, installing windows on the SSD, and setting up the HDD as a secondary.

Is there no way to not wipe the HDD and just transfer the OS to my SSD?

Why did you buy a 120GB SSD for only the OS...?

It'd probably be better just to do a complete clean reinstall of windows on the SSD and then have the HDD for games and stuff.

Is this correct?

1. Turn off computer, unplug power cord.
2. Attack SATA cable to SSD and install it in case.
3. Detach SATA cable of HDD.
4. Turn on PC and insert Windows installation disc.
5. Install Windows on SSD.
6. Turn PC off and attach HDD SATA back into mobo.
7. Game on!

Well, yes, you could do that. Wait, does the HDD have an OS on it? Also, you don't have to unplug the HDD. It might make it less confusing, but you should know what is what when you're installing.

That post is about setting the default installation for applications. Im just tryng to somehow transfer the OS from my HDD to my SSD :P.

I heard about Migration, going to look into that, but so far all ive found is a 20$ program on newegg that does it

Any thoughts on Acronis to Migrate my OS from my old HDD to my OS?

If I migrate the OS, do I just leave the OS on the HDD? Or delete it? Some people are saying some games wont work because theyre tied to the OS directory like all Steam games
