Looking for (free)software to edit an image, to 'crop' background out of it.

Don't know the terms, sorry.
take this unspecific image: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-AhGYXW0MpQc/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/sGjBx9rJ6zA/photo.jpg

If I wanted to grab that lady, her body + hair, and select her cleanly, but cut out all the back ground, green bits. So then you could take her and paste her into a volcano or whatever.

What is this called and and can someone recommend some software that's really good or simple to use for that? Frees good but I don't mind paying. Tutorials would of course be great.

I have paint.net and the magicwand tool SORT of attempts what I want, but if you click a black background to remove, it also removes like a black shirt, or heavy black eyeliner etc.

Anyone any idea what I mean and need please?

You need to zoom in and use the lasso tool and painstakingly outline what you want in the picture manually. Like this:

There's GIMP. It has more functionality than Paint.NET, but is harder to use.

I actually found (accidentally) a way to make paint.net better at it - there's a little button yo ucan click between a little globe and a lightbulb, that made its magic wand feature muuuuuuch better. But I've used a amalgamation of all options in this topic, thank you.

I'd still REALLY like to know if the process has a name/term though please?

There are multiple different ways to cut images out of photos. The best way to approach this depends on the complexity of the background in the image you are trying to cut from. The term used to describe the process depends on the process you use. Some common terminology for this task include cropping, masking, and cutting.

The best program available to do this sort of task is Adobe Photoshop, but it's expensive. You can probably find some good tutorials on how to mask images just by doing a simple YouTube or Google search. The best free Photo Editing program is probably GIMP.
