My brother dropped his external hard drive and now it's not working. He connects the usb and it powers on just fine but isn't recognized by the pc at all. I've already told him he's most likely assed out but are the chances any good that we could take it to a pc repair place and recover the data? I don't know if after opening the enclosure there's a way to swap out the "storage" part of the drive into another one with working components.

The only "non storage" part in an enclosure is the USB connection

Connect it to sata you mean? There's an odd clicking noise when it's on, that's why I was asking maybe it's one specific part that's broken not connected that's causing it.

Head Crash. The drive head has been damaged, if it can be replaced it will be expensive
