The 3 game bundle as part of the GTX 770 is really tantalizing, but the wider bit bus, 3GB of VRAM and superior compute performance makes me want to go AMD.

I've decided I want to stick to a reasonable budget to upgrade from my GTX 570, and this is pretty much my price range. Gaming at 1080p.

Can't seem to choose.

Currently leaning towards the R9 280X (for the long run, possible mantle?), despite the game bundle, but I love my Nvidia.

I would say if your getting 2 gb card your not really future proofing yourself very well.

Since arent games already starting to use close to the 2gb of ram the gpu has

Personally I'd go 280x but each to their own. Go with whichever you fancy best

Only BF4, but by the time 3GB vram is standard this 2 cards will be way useless.

I really don't know about that. My GTX 570 isn't useless, but it's low VRAM will make it useless well before it doesn't have the horsepower. It's already happening.

I mean, it'll always be able to do medium or so, but I can see some games on high not being particularly demanding, but wanting that 1.5-2GB VRAM in the future. A card like mine will suffer. Recommended VRAM requirements are kind of going through a climb and will likely plateau somewhere around 3GB over the next year or two.

2GB is fine for now, but as we know BF4 already wants more and it's a launch title. Game still runs okay with less, but you're taking a performance hit no doubt. I don't think it actually manifests as the dreaded "stutter", though.

I seem to be on a 2.5+ year upgrade cycle, so this is sort of a card for the long haul.

Yes, people really are underestimating VRAM.

With the next-gen consoles coming, it will also make sense financially to start pushing new techniques.

Remember that most of the current engines are held back by having to work on the old PS3/360

On a side note, if you get a 7970 (or 7970ghz), you'll get free games, as well.
And since 280x is just a rebrand of the 7970...

The problem is there is only few devs that will pump out games that will use more than 2GB VRAM at 1080p.

The model I'm looking at seems to be more like a 7970GHz for core OC potential. It already comes at 1GHz with a boost to 1100. I've seen some STANDARD 7970s in Canada running for about 30 dollars cheaper with some games, but I'm getting extra games and a worse card.

Also, what games come in the bundle? They don't usually say. I already have Hitman, Tomb Raider and FC3. I don't like Saints Row much, so what's left for me?

This. The 7970 will also support Mantle. Looking back, I should have gotten a 7970, but no use crying over spilled milk.
