Windows 8 kind of loses automatically. While some games run ~ 10% better on windows 8, some games don't run at all on windows 8. Windows 7 has far better compatibility with games than windows 8. Compatibility with all games > running some games ~ 10% better.

And some games run better on vista than 7 and some run better on xp than vista.
So bam! XP is clearly the best.

Bad reading comprehension? My post says that games running on Windows 8 a bit better is not worth it when you have games that outright won't work at all on Windows 8.

I like how Linux doesn't even register on peoples' lists. With Windows, you're guaranteed it'll work. Systems are designed to run Windows, and the manufacturer always supplies working drivers. And with Linux, you're lucky if a given distro runs and takes full advantage of your sytem, because it's done by unpaid volunteers, FOSS, etc.

8>7>Vista>2000>XP imo. 8/7/Vista are all about the same, really, but pre-8 they're all pretty similar for usability. Ubuntu would be probably around Vista level.

I haven't found any that don't work with W8. There were a couple that didn't work the first month or so it was out but that was over a year ago and they have been fixed.

DOS clearly belongs at the top of any such list.

Lean, efficient, easy to script against, no annoying icons cluttering up the screen... it's an easy choice for me.

Some days I yearn for the old command line interface.

98se #1

And yet, 98 se1 never could manage to even do something as simple as turn itself off.
It's amazing how crappy operating systems were back then.

Yep. My old 98SE machine shut down properly literally once, I remember this because I was really impressed. Other than that, it blue screened every time and I just had to hit the power button.

If that makes or breaks your frames then you have more important things to worry about. Such as upgrading your hardware.

Uh...getting more frames by just having win 8 rather than win 7 is a no loss situation. If we factor in costs, and the 15% increase is more than comparative increases of performance by upgrading hardware, for the same cost, then it's more worth it to switch to win 8 than to upgrade hardware. If we're talking about free switches, which can be done legally (students) then it's a 15% increase for no cost. Infinite return. I'm not sure how you can argue against this.

As far as compatibility issues go; I've had none. Of course this isn't to say that they don't exist. However, for people like me, who haven't had any compatibility issues, then they're practically non-existent.
