The 331.65 nVidia drivers are giving me performance issues

#1White Wolf KibaPosted 11/5/2013 9:34:50 AM
I was pretty pissed yesterday when I updated and found Saints Row IV, a game that runs absolutely beautifully for me on everything maxed out to have noticeably lower performance. Things just didn't work the way they should have and looking back now they were worse than I initially thought they were.

I ended up rolling back to 314.22 and everything works perfectly once again, but BF4 says it needs 320.something or later to work right, it works fine for me on ultra but I feel like I might be missing out on something if the game says it needs later drivers.

Is there a known issue with the 331.15 nVidia drivers that causes drops in performance? I checked the main topic about the driver release over at the nvidia forums, some people complain, some say it's fine so I dunno what to think.

My specs:
16GB RAM
i7 3820
GTX680 2GB

I don't know how to describe the loss in performance
the framerate if fraps is to be trusted was all over the place, but after rolling back to 314.22 I see that it's roughly the same, somewhat better but the smoothness I see on-screen is much much better, it's pretty perfectly smooth as it should be.

Hell I've done 20+ dragon battles in my heavily modded Skyrim without any issues, so I know my system well and know it can take anything I throw at it, so I don't know why the new drivers did this.

Everything with the new drivers was rougher and kind of stutterry, it was pretty damn strange.

So any advice? I don't know if I should stick to my old drivers or update.
what could have caused such a strange decrease in performance?

man nobody answers my question even on other forums.

Is this a known issue? Can I play BF4 single player without missing anything out graphically with 314.22 since graphics is all i care about in that game and is there a known solution to this thing about how the new drivers drastically decrease performance even in fairly lightweight games that normally run nicely for me.

Honestly I never update unless something is broken.

It's looking like 314.22 is the last good drivers nVidia is going to make.

The update before the most recent worked fine for me. But I ended up rolling back to 314.22 as well and haven't had any issues.

Thanks for the responses, guys.
So you're saying it's perfectly fine to play even BF4 with 314.22 even though it asks for some 320 driver?

I installed 331.65 again just to check and I'm starting to figure this out.
The framerate issue doesn't seem to be performance related but rather screen related.

Even when I lowered the graphics in Saints Row IV the thing was still there, it's as if there's a conflict with the refresh rate or vsync, I disabled vsync in-game but it was still there.

I'm running all my games at 60hz, it's how things always run for me.

What a ridiculous statement to make.

To answer you TC--not sure what to say, I started using 331.65 the day it came out and have yet to run into any issues. They recently (today) released an updated version of 331.65--try that.
