The 7950 is much cheaper. The 280x is still 300 pretty much everywhere but I can get a used 7950 in the 180-200 range.

If you can find it for ~$200 new it's not a bad deal (I got mine for $197) but the 280X is certainly better if you're only talking a $50 price difference.

The 280X is more like a 7970 GHz and supports DirectX 11.2.
