Does it seem worth it or are they too similar?

Why would you do that? They're literally the same GPU.

If you're worried about tessellation performance, and it's not going to come out to more than $5 for the "upgrade", why not?
Even people have toenails. Of course PCs have toenails. -claytonbuckley

Maybe you could crossfire the 7970?

I'm thinking of crossfiring my 7950 myself. Anyone have a 7950 CF? Is it smooth and problem-free?

Isn't that based on raw GPU specs?

Assuming AMD Mantle does well, I would recommend that you pick the R9 280X.

Isn't the 280x a rebranded 7970 Ghz?

I would personally invest in a second 7970 ghz.
