The R9 290 without a doubt.

I saw that the 280X has a core clock of 1000mhz whilst the 290 is only 947.

Its also 100 bucks cheaper.

Or am i looking past some things?

The 290 has about 500 more processor cores and double the ROPs along with higher memory bus width.

The R90 is better than the 280x no doubt

Its also extremely loud and it runs hot so thats just a heads up if you get it. The performance also varies from card to card because the cards clock rate changes with how well it can cool itself.
