Managed to get him down to $250. After a little research this card looks to be the king of 7970s.

Would it be a good idea to upgrade my EVGA GTX 580 SC to this bad boy? I figure I can sell my 580 for at least $150, so I won't have to lose that much money in the long run!

Seems like a waste of $100 to me. Slightly better or no performance gain depending on the game. It uses less wattage, but you obviously already have a system that can handle your 580.
