Is an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 still a descent CPU?

Giving my old PC to my Nephew so he can play some games on it. I plan on installing a GTX 760 on it as well. Will the CPU bottleneck the card?

It should be fine for Minecraft.

It's decent enough but if you haven't bought it already I'd put a more comparable gpu in it. Something like a 460.

It's still decent.

760 will likely be overkill though. Anything above a 660 or 7870 will be more or less wasted in many games.

What do you mean wasted? Do you mean the 760 won't be utilized to it's full potential?

I think that's fast enough today

Even better if you can OC it for him and show him how to, you'll go up 1GHz

That's bulls***. In only a few games will that CPU bottleneck the 760.

Not really, I used a 580 with my phenom II for a while. Bottlenecks all around. BF3, Starcaft II, Planetside 2, BF4 beta, AC3, etc.

The Q9000 CPUs are like my phenom II, they're budget CPUs and in a lot of newer games they can only get like 30-40 FPS anyway. Looking at the CPU reqs of stuff like watch dogs, AC4, etc.

I'm with JonWood. I think it will bottleneck a bit. Aim for the 660 or 7850 range for a video card. Having a 760 won't hurt. It's just kind of a waste in my opinion.
