Is it possible to hide the contents of a file? Want to release a mod but...

As soon as you allow someone to download files to their own PC it is 100% out of your scope and they can do whatever they want with those files.

You can encrypt files with a password but then they won't be able to use them. If the mod is straight up code there are ways to package it up into an unreadable .dll but even then a determined individual could just dump the data from memory, where it must be decrypted to run.

User modding has always been open source. That's kind of the whole point.

EDIT - The only proven way to stop hackers from seeing your code is to run your code on your own server, ala Sim City. It works but why is it even necessary?

I suppose you could hide a message or something within the code that states who the author is. If they don't notice it, and it's still in their mod, then you could call them out on it.

Surely there's a way to mess with it somehow. What's the game?

Is this just an ini/settings file or something?

The game is State of Decay.

The files being edited are win.bmd files. I was hex editing them before but now someone released a BMD editor and ive been working with that now.

Im not sure if adding something to the code in there will mess up the changes. Guess ill have to test it.

There's a reason why mods are free.

tc seems to misunderstand the point of modding
