Why do people think it's ok to ask for computer help for free?

If I were a mechanic whose hobby was working on cars, none of my friends/realtives (other than like my mom) would think it would be ok to ask me to do work for them for free. Sitting in front of a computer for 4 hours trying to remove all nature of malware and viruses without losing personal data isn't what I'd consider fun.

I usually just say I'm busy or something, but damn.

People are different.

I'd have no trouble whatsoever helping friends and family in that case, and I've had plenty of friends and family help me with car trouble specifically. They're typically more than happy to help, considering they happen to value friendship and family over money.

I charge an extra $35 to organize clients porn folders. You'd be surprised how much extra cash you earn from that.

Loyalty to your family. This is the reason the Mafia gets stronger everyday, because normal families don't have loyalty to each other.

I agree. I'm the go to guy for computer problems in my family. I know what I'm doing and I have the time to help, but it's not what I like to do with my free time. It does take time too, especially when it's not your computer. You don't know what it's been through recently, so it's really hard to determine exactly what is causing the problem or when it started. It takes time.

I do it for free, of course, but sometimes it would be nice to get something out of it. Nobody in my family does anything besides computers, so there really isn't anything anyone else can help me with. Buy me dinner or something at least!

Also, there's a HUGE difference in time/effort/skill needed to tune up a car vs. downloading some malware software and having to wait while it runs.

Fixed that for you.

The only things I fix for free are things that are trivial to me... If it involves "work" then I expect to get paid in some way for that work.

In some ways a friend of mine who is more mechanically minded does the same for me with car help...and in some cases he lets me use his tools and expects me to do it myself if it's simple enough. But for people who aren't close friends or family, I'd tell them how to fix it (if I know from their description of the problem) and if they can't or don't want to do it, then they can pay me.

No, even normal ones can have the same problem. There's a difference between having their back and providing whatever service you do for a job for free.
