Going to order a 290, which manufacturer is best?

Nvidia.

Isn't Nvidia really just more for less?

a 770 GTX isn't as powerful.

According to Toms, most manufacturers purchased the boards direct from AMD, so it shouldn't matter which OEM you choose; the're all coming from the same place.

Some of the Powercolor ones can be flashed to a 290X, so that might be worth checking out. There don't seem to be any 290 s with custom coolers out yet, so I guess that doesn't make much difference. You can't really go wrong with Sapphire if you don't plan on trying flashing.

Came in here to say this, dont they have a dual bios? If you wanted to try flashing you couldn't go wrong and brick your card.

Only reference models are available. A Sapphire representative actually said something along the line that they didn't manufacture these. They just get shipped from AMD and all they do is slap their stickers on them and put them in the box.

I bought an XFX R9 290 from Amazon. I have not had any problems. Get that one.

I don't trust AMD reference anyway. The only good part is probably the chip and the VRAM. Let the board partners do their homework.

So if I do crank up fan speeds in MSI afterburner, the heat shouldn't be an issue? I could live with the fan at 100%

No, you couldn't. I guarantee it.

Yeah, 100% fan speed on that is like having a speaker hissing white noise in your room at all times.
