Well now, that depends on the size of the monitor itself, the monitor would have to be roughly between 14.5" and 20" to reach the same PPI than a Retina display, which range between 220 and 326 PPI.

3D just won't ever become mainstream for the sole reason that there are tons of people who just can't see the effect or have poor eyesight or eye issues and can't see it.
