But the actual winamp player itself will still play music, right? I don't see how the program will magically quit working entirely. It just won't have updates anymore.

Well, yeah, it'll still work (read the first link), but as other media players improve and as more bugs/security holes pop up in Winamp, there'll be absolutely no reason to continue using Winamp.

Since it seems that the good ole' days of Llama whipping will be ending, what does PCH recommend for a new music playing program?

It's pretty garbage since it's still designed to run in XP with admin rights, hence the UAC when you bring up the settings. Guess they couldn't figure out how to store settings in the user's appdata like you're supposed to? If it's for the file type defaults, they really should just bring up the dialog that Windows already has built in.
