My GTX 480 has aged worse than any other GPU I've owned.

Biggest waste of a premium card in recent memory, too. The 580 came out immediately and was superior in all ways. The 680 and 780 solidified it as a piece of crap mid range card. I can't even pull 25-30fps out of Black Flag maxed with no vsync or AA on 1080p anymore. :/

Fermi was pretty bad yeah

The 580 wasn't much better, just cooler

Ati won with the 5870 arch until... Kepler I'd say.

The new cards aren't even that fast in older games, just better with DX11. The titan cards and the new 290s are very fast though

Until I started paying attention with fraps, I haven't noticed I'm just barely pulling a (very smooth) 25-35fps in almost every graphically intensive game I own with fermi. The rest of my rig is quite good, I really need to upgrade to a new high end card.

I'd say try the 770 or the 280X (~$300)

they're about the same price and performance but the 280X is the bigger card

At 1080p would that be a worthwhile leap in performance from my 480? If you can't tell, I really hate this thing, and want 45-60fps in games I enjoy. This card is very sluggish.

Well the 780 is 500

The 290 is just really hot... its a lot like the Fermi in that respect, but it's been proven with good cooling to hold a lot better, and it starts at 400

If your temps are over 80C perhaps you can do something about it

If you don't mind the temps on a 480 you'll probably be extremely happy with a 290, especially once the customized models are available, so long as you won't miss any nvidia features

I don't mind heat or have any nvidia fanboyism to its "features". I might check out the 290. Is the 290x worth the price hike?

I would say no but I haven't seen either card on anything but the reference cooler. With the ref cooler they are extremely close but the 290x may scale better with cooling so I won't say for sure. some models of 290 can also be unlocked to a full 290x anyway so that's something to look into. I don't know anything about that though, aside from sapphire being one of the brands that can be unlocked.

No Sapphire cards have unlocked AFAIK. PowerColor has a near 100% unlock rate atm, and some XFX cards will unlock too.
