Is it fairly easy to replace a laptop's hard drive?

I'd like to remove a 5400RPM hard drive from my HP envy laptop and replace it with like a 120GB SSD to boost the performance.

Would this be pretty hard to do or rather straightforward?

You need one really obscure tool, it is called a screwdriver. It might be hard to find one though.

Just make sure you know what you're doing with regards to drivers and your operating system, and you should be fine.

The 840 EVO was designed to replace the 840, not the 840 Pro (this one is better).

This. Before the EVO it was 840 Pro > 830 > 840.
After the EVO it's probably 840 Pro > 840 EVO > 830 > 840.
