Is Windows 8.1 good, compared to Vista?

#1jelly2008Posted 11/23/2013 6:29:30 AM
I'm getting tired of Vista's unoptimizedness. And also, I'm stuck with a 32-bit OS (didn't think it'd last all the way from back then). Looking to jump to 64-bit now. Is Windows 8.1 good, performance-wise? Never mind the new interface. I'm willing to relearn. :)

8 is 7 in drag which was itself Vista in drag. It runs somewhat smoother and does have increased performance but don't expect miracles.

I went from Vista 64 to 8.1. I was decently satisfied with Vista, but 8.1 is still better. Its quicker, games perform about 20% better in framerate and everything just runs a lot more smoothly.

Aha. That's a relief.

TC - You are NOT going to get a 20% increase in performance. You might get 3 -5%, and in most games you won't even get that.

He said he's going from Vista, not Windows 7.

Nah bro, I tested it out and everything. Got about 20% improvement in performance accross the board. And even bigger jumps in modern games like Battlefield 4.

Windows 8 utilizes multi core CPU set ups much better than Vista and 7. Established hardware benchmarking sites even confirm this

In regards to the UI, I suggest looking at the free Classic Shell if you want the start menu back.

However, unless a patch has been released, I've heard there is an issue in regards to IIRC mouse lag in games so check this first.

Yes, in cases where the multicore setups are fully utilized it'll have a performance boost, even moreso if the games use DX11.1. That's a big IF atm though, as there's not all that many games that take full advantage of more than two cores
