Can you play Path of Exile solo mode like D3?

Or are you forced to play with others? Because I'm noticing online lag or the hits aren't registering on the enemy.

You can play solo, the game is tougher then Diablo 3 though.

Yeah I just died a couple times in the beginning. Though its not as hard as Demon Souls/Dark Souls and I completely hated that game afterwards.

You are not forced to play with other players, but in hub towns you will see other people. You will also see other players in the chat.

Yeah, that's server desync. Major problem that persisted all throughout the beta into release and apparently GGG has no intention of fixing.

Which is especially aggravating because they made a command to manually sync to the server (/oos, use it at any time, especially after a fight and you'll notice all the corpses shift to their actual location).

It's not that big of a deal with ranged characters, but it can result in melee characters dying to otherwise entirely preventable situations when you're trying to evade or kill something and you're still taking damage from seemingly nothing.

I've not played it much yet but I do enjoy it. I was surprised by the difficulty of the act bosses compared to how easy Diablo 3 was during the first couple difficulties.

It's not quite as simple as it sounds.

Diablo 3 side steps the issue by letting monsters occupy the same space (mostly eliminating problems brought by pathing), and by making most attacks hit a huge radius and distance away from the play (even if the monster is five feet away, your reach would connect). It has desyncs too (every multiplayer game does), but you generally don't notice them because Diablo 3 is designed to help hide them. GGG on the other hand wants to keep combat very deliberate, you aim for a specific enemy and (hopefully) you hit it if it's within a more realistic range.

The other alternative is to automatically sync resync each player at regular intervals, which would drive bandwidth costs up, which for a company trying it's hardest to keep a game free to play without selling stuff that affects gameplay, it's probably out of the question for now.
