I'm replacing the cpu, mobo, ram and gpu and I need to know which kind of gpu I should get for him.

he wants something cheaper, he's coming from phenom4 and ati 5770. i was thinking the 7870 series from amd would be cost efficient

I think the 270X is just a newer 7870 GHz anyway. I assumed they were around the same price but I just found this really good deal

Not really, spend that money on a better GPU, or buck up the money for at least a 100GB SSD. You would barely have room for anything other than the OS on that.
