Why did you stop, and what would make you play again? It seems like I'm not the only one who played this game for way, way, way too long.

Also what do you play now instead, or are you still playing?

For me, I really couldn't keep loyal after Jagex added all of the Cash Shop stuff. Microtransactions turn me off. I don't like it when people are walking around in special cosmetic gear that you can only get (until recently with Bonds) if you payed for it with RL cash.

I always consider going back but I don't think it's for me anymore.

I was slowly growing out of it as I aged. However, I still played here and there, but the new combat system and the cash shop just completely killed it for me. I logged into my old account a couple weeks ago and gave it another try actually... It was even worse than it was when I quit. The player numbers are dwindling and the game itself has transformed into something so far from it's roots that I can't understand at all what Jagex must have been thinking.
Live like there's no tomorrow. Even if there is, nobody gives a damn.

It started to feel too grindy. I didn't play it that much but I did get a few skills to 99. I would just idle and fish, mine or farm non-threatening mobs for skills. I liked the exploration feel but after gaining better understanding of the game it felt pointless to really do anything except farm.

I think you summed up almost everyone's reason.

Tried it when it first came out when it was an awkward low quality browser game. Before it became a magnet for non PC gamers and little kids who didn't have a credit card to play a real MMO and got popular.

Bad then bad now.

I never played it.

Ok, that may be a bit of a lie. When it first came out, way back in 2001/2002, when I was in late Middle School; one of my friends showed it to me during my CAD class. I played for maybe a total of 5 minutes, and decided it was a crap game and never played it again.

Not when RuneScape 2 came out, not now, not ever.

Played in 2004 for about a year. First mass multiplayer online experience. Then the guy that introduced me to Runescape introduced me to WoW.

That was pretty much what I thought of it in a nutshell.

I guess now it's an actual game, but when I first played it, it was some horrible browser/flash game that didn't even look good for a flash/browser game; let alone was it "fun".

It is one of the most developed MMO's in terms of story. The problem is that the games developers did a few **** yous to the longer time playerbase that was primarily PvPers, reversed some of the updates and then revamped the entire combat system making it so long standing clans did not want to play anymore (I had very little to do with that however).

The problem now is that they are targeting a totally different audience and that there is a huge schism between people who want the game as it was and people who want the game as it is. It's very sad to see a game with 2 million active subscribers (mainly bots but w/e) dwindle down to 500,000 because of poor management.

Oh yea and they stopped doing monthly quests, in favor of changing their graphics engine every year and selling cash shop cosmetics.
