What exactly qualifies as a "gaming laptop"?

#1HeyWheresKelPosted 12/1/2013 9:45:43 PM(edited)
If a laptop can efficiently run a modern PC game, but only under minimal graphics settings, does that make it a gaming laptop? My Dell Latitude laptop is about 5 years old and can run WoW under minimal graphical settings, but it can't run games like GW2 or Minecraft at all unless I want to deal with crippling lag. If I wanted to be able to efficiently run GW2 with the lowest settings, would I need a fancy $1,000+ laptop?

A gaming laptop usually has discrete graphics and normally costs 1000 plus.Just because you can play games on lower end laptop does not make it a gaming laptop. With a gaming laptop there is a massive increase in performance when compared to lower end ones. I've owned laptops that could play games but that was not really the purpose for it.

If you want to play gw2 on a laptop yeah your going to have to spend a decent penny. A new lower end laptop might be able to run it, but you'll have problems when in populated areas of the game. In other words you'll have to avoid all the fun stuff.

In heavy player traffic gw2 can give even decent desktop equipment a run for its money.

Gaming laptop has a GPU good enough to game on.

Hard concept.

Yes to run Gw2 on semi decent settings you're going to need at least a $1000.00 laptop.

You can get by with $800 pretty easily on GW2. Less, if you really only want lowest settings, but I would incredibly strongly recommend against that.

I had to get rid of a $1400 gaming laptop I bought in 2011 (i7 and a 2GB 560m) because it ran GW2 horribly. It would play but would lag horribly in Lions Arch and WVW. Also I would highly recommend an SSD if you're going to play WVW. Everytime I teleported to a waypoint with my guild they would load so much faster that they would be a couple of hundred yards away by the time I loaded in,

Okay, then let's take GW2 out of the equation. What about stuff like Minecraft, WoW, or a multiplatform game like Arkham Asylum? Is that stuff as demanding as GW2?

For people saying you need a $1000 laptop to play GW2, that's just wrong. I have a $599 laptop that has a 740m and an i5 and I could run GW2 and FF14 on high or better.
