Ok this is sad, I can't tell if you guys are making poke josts or not.

Dead serious. Shield is shaping up to be some serious piece of kit, with GameStream, constantly improving compatibility, improvements in functionality from Android updates, and now GeForce Grid going into beta.

SO what Nvidia card = the 7970 then?

GTX670.
Might want to be quick, though. Last day of the sexy Black Friday deal. Free case and $50 off!

I am also serious! I am pausing my game (castlevania lords of shadow) while in bed, to write this post on my shield. I love it.
Get a 780 or at least a 770. I have a 770 and love it, but if I were buying today I would get a 780.

680/770 is more powerful than 7970, so that would be 670, since it is somewhere between 760 and 770.

I'm looking online and the 680 is either way too expensive or people are saying the 7970 is superior to the 670.

hmmmmm.

Fanboys gonna fanboy.
That, or they're talking about the 7970ghz, which is different from a regular 7970. 680/770 is par with 7970ghz/280x. 670 is par with 7970 regular. 660Ti is kinda a bit faster than 270x or 7870, which is kinda a bit faster than 660 non-ti, which is faster than 7850, which is par with 650Ti Boost.

680 is way to expensive. It's an old product and was replaced by the 770. There's no reason to get a 680 new anymore unless it's to pair with another 680 for SLI, or it's on clearance price for cheaper than a 770.

That's a standard 7970, so 670 would be par.
Might want to consider an upgrade, though, just to make sure you aren't losing performance in a game you like. Par doesn't mean exactly the same framerate in everything, after all. Some games will take to a 7970 better than 670 and vice versa.

I just want to say a few things about my shield.

A: the screen is too small

B: it is the ultimate steam box! I can have my monster machine in my office and game on any TV in the house at 1080p 60fps.

C: I have never played more games than now because I am able to play on the coach streaming, while my son watches toy story. I can stream and do stream every night in bed for 40 minutes plus before I sleep. I am 33, married, and have a 2 year old. I love this thing.

What I suggest

Option 1: Buy R9 280x for crossfire

Option 2: Sell the old 7970, buy a 770 or 780 and a Shield
