Mass Effect sucked from the start, I honestly don't know how or why people praise that game/series as much as they do.

Why was it so bad?

It's not terrible, though the latter two entries were. It just pales in comparison to BioWare's earlier games like Baldur's Gate 2 and Neverwinter Nights. Same reason DA:O doesn't deserve half the hype it got.

Bad gun play, bad dialogue, boring level design.

What was good about it?

I haven't played the DLC, but I heard the one that's about the Leviathans adds some good backstory on the Catalyst and the Reapers.

Not only that, but if you get the secret "perfect" ending with the Extended Cut DLC, it's actually not that bad. However, it's still a shame that there's only one way to get a decent ending.

I'll never understand how anyone could like ME1 more than the sequels. ME1 was so heavily flawed all around, it was the Assassin's Creed 1 of the franchise and the sequels went and fixed nearly every problem of the original.

I also don't get the love for Dragon Age Origins, that was one of the most soulless attempts at a fantasy RPG I've played. Not once do any of the player choices impact the plot for longer than 5 minutes. The combat was very dull as well, it actually felt like a MMORPG. There wasn't anything about the game that stood out to me.

It sure is a shame how ME stayed good throughout the trilogy. If it hadn't, your whining might actually mean something.

It's funny because Dragon Age was what Bioware was working on right before EA bought them. So you really do have a noticeable break from when Bioware went from making quality games to meh.

Mass Effect is a series that flourishes on characters and setpieces and falls on its face when it has to tell a story.

Truth be told, Bioware's never been that good with story; they're good with dialogue and okay with characters, but they can't write a good story to save their lives.

The dialogue in ME was more hamfisted than the dialogue in my creative writing pieces from middle school.

Well, they think they're good writers.
