Which is the best version as far as quality goes? I don't want it crashing all of a sudden, and I also would like it in widescreen.

I would emulate any day, if only for the fast-forward feature. Oh yeah, and save states too.

Emulate it. Widescreen + enhanced graphics + fast forward + original musics = WIN.

Oh yeah, forgot to add that I didn't really enjoy the combat in FF7. I like actual turn based combat, not some real time/turn based crap. Is FF8 the same in this way?

I'm pretty sure both games have an option in the configuration to make enemies wait while you're selecting your commands, if that's what you're getting at.

Why is it that he can hit a 3rd baseman on a frozen rope from 300 feet away, but he can't hit a 12 foot tall catcher from 60 feet 6 inches away?

I seriously doubt emulating the game would be better than the steam version. I guess you guys don't emulate many games if you think it's all hassle free and better than a retail pc version of the game.

Well, it may or may not be hassle free, depending on how well configured your emulator is. Anyway, the PC version isn't garbage, but it has some disvantages, like:

-Has horrible Direct Music songs. You can find an unnofficial patch, but then this version won't be hassle free;

-Doesn't accept any kind of filtering, other than the bilinear filter (which looks horribly blurry). And the 2d backgrounds look pixelated, BTW;

-Has videos in 16-bit color. Not only that, but they are in BINK, which looks weird in scenes with faster motions;

The emulated PSX version, on the other hand...

-Has amazing musics, using the original soundfront made specially for the game;

-You can use shaders, some of them make the game look MILLION times better than the PC version. The Advanced AA shader makes the backgrounds look high resolution, but without becoming blurry;

-Has 32-bit color videos, and doesn't require any outdated codec, like the PC version.
