So I'm upgrading the DAUGHTERboard of my laptop

#1StarksPosted 12/8/2013 9:51:08 PM
Dell Inspiron 7520

Core i7-3632QM
Radeon 7730M
8GB DDR3
Intel Wireless 2230
15.6" Matte FHD

The replacement daughterboard ($10 from Dell) adds an mSATA slot and controller.

By swapping it out, I also technically upgrade the two of the four USB 3.0 slots and the ethernet jack.

Simultaneously, I will be replacing the 2230, which is also located on the daughterboard, with a 6230 which adds 5GHz and 802.11a.

By the time this laptop is replaced, I expect it to carry 3 SSD drives in software RAID (or double SSD cache if that's not practical). Main bay. Optical bay. mSATA bay. I'll also upgrade the battery from 48Whr to 60Whr.

Does your laptop have a daughterboard?

Daughterboards are still around?

Last time I used one was ~15 years ago, had a Roland Sound Canvas for my Sound Blaster... made those Sierra point-n-click adventures sound goooooooood.

No.

Does your laptop have ~120 of high quality tentacle yaoi hentai?

No?

I think we know who the winner is here.

I still see a lot of riser cards in small form factor PCs

But I haven't seen a legit daughterboard since the Chaintech Media Riser from 10 or so years ago

Proprietary slot that existed only for this one card and enabling surround sound on one of the crappiest nForce 3 mobos I ever owned.

Asrock also made a feeble attempt at a CPU daughterboard to upgrade an AM2 mobo to AM3

Ironically, I also owned this mobo

Wrong. The daughterboard upgrade was from 939 to AM2. And it wasn't a feeble attempt at all, it produced a viable and stable platform. I should know, that I used that ASRock daughterboard for 5 years until I upgraded. Still works fine today.
