Seems like a game right up my alley. Anyone here give me a 'yay' or 'nay' and why? Or if you have a recommendation for a different turn based 4x game (it doesn't have to be in space/scifi)

No:

As beautiful as it is, it feels lifeless. Game is too simple (but I am a guy who played some complex wargames and grand strategies). Game lacks a "soul" that you could find in space games such as master of orion 2 and distant worlds. Cinematic rock-paper-scissors-ish kind of battle mechanics is boring (I prefer Civ V or EU4/CK2 style over that). Its sad that the game is just lifeless.

What kind of games are you looking for? I might help you in the strategy department as I love strategy to the point that I even try whatever unheard of strategy game I could find. I am mostly playing TBS or pausable RTS though.

It's alright, I really like the battle system. They're very cinematic too, so it's fun to watch.

I don't know, I think we may be of different mind sets in regards to what makes a good strategy game. I'm on the side of less is more rather than being complex just for the sake of being complex. I've tried getting into CK2 and I just can't do it.

I think FTL is perfect example of what I'm talking about. Simple gameplay that isn't shallow. Something that feels like a good marriage of video and board games.

My Recommendation and some of it are my personal favourites. Be warned, some of it really requires you to be openminded about strategy games:

- Europa Universalis 4
- Crusader Kings 2
- Dominions 4 (3 if you are short on cash but get 4 if you didn't have 3 yet)
- Conquest of Elysium 3
- Master of Orion 2
- Master of Magic
- Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri/Alien Crossfire
- Heroes of Might and Magic 3
- Eador: Masters of the broken world(get genesis if you don't mind the graphics and if you want the old school feel)
- King's bounty (1, armoured princess, crossroads, and warriors of the north. Loved warriors of the north but never finished it)
- Panzer Corps/Afrika Corps/ Allied Corps (modern panzer general)
- Fallen Enchantress Legendary Heroes
- Distant Worlds plus all expansions
- Galactic Civilization2
- Age of Wonders Shadow Magic
- Advanced Tactics Gold (great entry in to wargaming with random map generator)
- Civilization V
- Imperialism 2
- Victoria II
- Hearts of Iron 3
-Pandora: First Contact (Modern SMAC spiritual successor)

Endless Space is insanely boring. One of the worst 4x games ever created.

Maybe I'll just give Civ 5 another shot.

I tried it once but for some reason the game didn't scale correctly for my display and the bottom of the screen was cut off. I'll have to fiddle with my display settings or something.
