I bought it in a sale a while ago but I hear it's a broken and buggy mess. What do PCH?

Install fan patch - play amazing game - a winner is you.

How many times has the game went on sale? There have been so many times where you could have gotten it for around $3.

It's Steam, who gives a s*** about non-sale prices?

Exactly.

Also, here is an even older game for $20 that is worth every penny, but you still wait for the sale for.

Publisher: Activision

Cause that.

this. Has nothing to do with being a great game. There are tons of great games that are cheaper. Activision just like keeping their prices higher.

I feel like I should love this game but I can't get into it no matter how many times I try.

It's worth the 20, it's probably better than any other game you played this year.

I just wish it would get released on GOG already. I don't like owning old games on Steam as in my experience a lot of mods for older games won't work if the game is in Program Files, and sometimes they still won't work if Steam knows where the game is at all (Thief and Thief 2 are examples). So you end up having to install the game, copy the directory to some place Steam can't touch, then mod it there and play without Steam. This works for those two games because they're actually the GOG versions.

Have any non-Valve Source games ever been released outside Steam?

How far into it have you gotten? It took me a few tries to get into it but once you do, Jesus f***ing Christ it's hard to put it down. The story is my favorite out of any video game I have ever played and once your skills get up a bit higher the gameplay is great fun.

People like to exaggerate. There's a community patch that fixes most of it. Still has a few bugs but is far from unplayable.
