Fallout 1

Finally getting some time to play some of the "greats" I missed.
Wandering if Fallout 1 is worth getting or if I just skip to 2. Also BoS and Gothic 1 (grabbed 2 already).

Both 1 and 2 are good, I don't see the point of skipping the first, it is similar to the second.

Both are great, although Fallout 1 is stupid easy. Use sfall for both, it improves compatibility, fixes some stuff, adds some display options like windowed mode, and in the case of Fallout 1, adds a few nice things from Fallout 2 like mouse wheel to scroll inventory.

Brotherhood of Steel is a great tactical strategy game, but it's not similar to Fallout 1/2 despite using the same setting and stat system.

Why did it occur to you to skip to 2? Both are among the best RPGs ever. I'd put 1 a bit ahead of 2, in fact - it's a shorter game, but it's also an intensely focused, refined, and cohesive experience, whereas Fallout 2 can feel a bit thrown together.

1 is easier in the beginning and they're both good. Play both. You might want to install an unofficial patch or two.

Good to hear. I knew 2 was good and conversation about the original games seemed to be mostly about it. Wasn't sure if 1 missed some marks or something.

It's important to the story. The first Fallout really establishes the most of Fallout canon and sets the tone of the whole series. Fallout 2 greatly expands on everything and there's much more moral ambiguity as well as giving the player a lot more options to role play as an evil character. Also if you beat Fallout 1, there are a lot of references to things that happened to these locations in the Fallout 2 timeline including a very ironic twist that would have made the first game a lot shorter. You'd lose the context of some in jokes and aspects of the plot if you skipped the first game.
