New hard drive, Is this normal?

#101Philip01Posted 12/11/2013 4:00:54 PM(edited)
Installed a new one terabyte WD blue HDD, and I noticed I get a bit of a whirring sound, ( probably vibrations from my HDD cage, my case is the haf 912) when feeling the drive I can feel the drive speeding up and then slowing down repeatedly. [never to a stop] There's nothing on it yet, just newly formatted. Is this supposed to happen? My other old hard drives seems to just be constantly spinning.

Bump, I'm probably over-reacting but need some reassurance. ^^

Is it under warranty? If so, make sure the important data is backed up and continue to run the thing. Have you tried putting it in another slot, with different screws, etc?

I don't think any of my drives repeatedly spin up and down again, though I've never had a WD Blue before.

Actually I just did a google search for WD Blue and I Started to type "Spin" and "Spin down" came up... lots of reports of that behavior, probably meant to save power or maybe extend the drive's life (at the expense of performance).

That may have the answer you're looking for.

@YOeastonYO

Literally just bought it.

And yeah I also researched it and got a lot of people saying they have the same problem with the same hdd as I have, believe they call it "seeking". Apparently the older versions are fine and quiet, just these newer ones made in a different place have em.

I put it in different slots, different sata cables, I can confirm it is the hard drive itself.

Debating if I should return it and pay the 15% restocking fee, My computer is loud enough [ loud power supply ] and my haf 912 having its whole front exposed acts as vibration amplifier for sound. Guess il see how much it ticks me off, and decide if to do it.

I think there's a Windows setting where you can turn off the power saving for the HDD and that might help, I can't help you with where it is though.

@Crimson_Jesus

Yeah power settings only had one option that said shut down hard drive after x minutes and it was set at 20. This happens no matter what.

The best course of action is to just get the information you need, then get out while you're still alive. - destroy everything on GameFAQs
