I was going thru some older copies of PC gamer and found this one back from June 2004 with half life 2 on the cover. Here are three pages showing a pc console.

I never saw those, but I'd say the technology and market has changed and it helps that it's coming from Valve.

Isn't the Steam thing just an OS that you install on your own computer that you build? Those pictures look like pre-built hardware.

Nothing. Steam Machines aren't consoles, they're just PCs running SteamOS.
