Weird error message when playing Fallout 2...

#1EngineeringRacePosted 12/16/2013 4:22:18 PM
I just recently got the free Fallout 2 from GOG and it's been crashing frequently. This is the error that pops up:

"fallout 2. The instruction at 60488728 referenced memory at 7a000288. The memory could not be written. Click on OK to terminate the application"

I really don't know what could be causing memory problems. I have the game running windowed mode with a resolution patch.

Uh, someone recently had problems with Fallout and getting it to run. I did too way back when I tried to play it on a "modern" machine. I say "modern" because it was a crappy laptop...but damn near a super computer compared to what I played the original Fallout games on when they were released.

Anyway, try running the game in compatibility mode, disable visual themes, disable DPI settings, disable desktop composition, and run in admin mode. Doing those things tend to solve a lot of problems.

Tried all those things. It's still happening.

i can't find much on this, here's what i found after 20secs of googling:

could be a corrupt master.dat file -> reinstall
could be a high res patch bug -> don't use it
could be a faulty HDD -> run chkdisk
could be the ddraw.dll -> del it

install and run killAps unofficial patch (you prob should have it anyway, it fixes 1000s of bugs for this complex game)

Ok, I found the problem. Apparently using X2 scaling with Windowed mode causes the game to crash.

The only thing I'm still confused about is how the framerate is so jumpy. It goes from 40 - 120 fps (I limited it to 120 using MSI).

Could someone help me out with the fps issue? What sort of fps do you guys get when playing the game?

i'm never helping you again, you are ungrateful. you ask a question, ppl take time out to venture possible answers, you fix your prob and thank no one.

and i doubt you fixed it anyway, that doesn't seem like a prob at all. you don't know what you're doing, and are a waste of my time.
