Should I be skeptical/weary of a free "Smart Router" offered by my ISP?

#1__Cam__Posted 12/18/2013 11:32:39 AM
My ISP sent out an E-Mail basically saying that my family's eligible for a wireless router upgrade. We found out that it's a "smart router" that requires everyone in the family to have a specific account which we can tie all our devices to. I find this weird, seeing as how there would be no reason for that extra level of security.

Does this mean that my ISP can look up specific programs I use, web browsing history, etc.? Hell, could an administrator account on the router look that up?

They can look at any of your network traffic regardless. And they'll forfeit it to the FBI if they get a warrant for it.

Ah. What about a local "administrator" account? I have a crazy brother that likes to have control over everything. Could that type of account get into the others?

Well, yeah. If they cared enough they could totally see that before. What you should be wary of is the quality of the router they'll send you. Most of the time, the routers sent by ISPs are absolute garbage. Verizon's isn't bad, but good luck if you have Time Warner or Cablevision.

At least when I had TWC, they sent out a separate modem and router. Threw away that garbage. My ATT on the other hand...
