What's the best controller for platformers?

Specifically, platformers like Megaman X.

Do you really need a controller per genre? Get an Xbox/PS3 controller based on your preference and be done.

I don't like convex analog sticks so I chose the xbox controller.

Most games naturally support that controller too.

I have a 360 controller and its D-pad isn't very good. Despite being circular there are points in its rotation where nothing registers, like a dead zone.

Honestly, maybe I should just get a PS2 controller or something.

A lot of people prefer nes or snes adapted controllers for old school style platformers.
