It's marketed as old school, but it most certainly is not old school. It's an unholy hybrid of old school and new school that fails to capture the virtues of either.

Nothing these days is really "old school" because that would turn people off. It's old school in that the objective in nearly every level is basically to just kill anything that moves (while on the way to flip a switch or whatever), there's some health around the level rather than having regenerating health, and you have access to more than 2 weapons at a time.

It's not Doom 2 nor is it Quake 2 or anything else... but it's also not Halo and it's not Call of Duty or whatever else.

I liked the game. It's not "OMFG AWESOME" but it's not worth telling others to avoid it either.

If they were selling this for $30 I'd say yeah... don't buy, except the normal price is half that and the sale price right now is under $4. I can easily say this is worth $4.

This. The game is crap.

Shadow Warrior is similarly, not an old school game, but a crappy new school game, complete with hallway-like level design, and trashy RPG features.

I don't think the game is crap. it's pretty average. and for the price they were asking on that steam sale it's totally worth it. Gamers just have abnormally high expectations, especially PC gamers.
