What do you consider "play"

Just start the game and have it not crash under very low settings and frames. Possibly any game.
Run it at high preset graphical settings. 2005 and older, and a few newer ones.

Is kotor 2 the newest game you plan on playing? I don't see why it wouldn't run that

You play most games but only at low settings.

Intel HD 4000 is actually good enough to play many New Games on low settings. I have a MS Surface Pro (Intel HD 4000) and it plays Endless Space, which is a pretty new game.

you should be able to play most any game out there right now though that will start going down pretty soon. your HD 4000 is good for about low to med settings on most stuff but FPS will be low.

As to what year. who knows. it will still be able to play the majority of indie games for years I am sure. though moving in to next year and years after newer big budget games are not going to run or they will bake your laptop if you can manage to barely run them.

You can play most Directx 10 games at medium. I don't think you can play Directx 11 games without serious lagging.
