So what exactly does Windows 7 have over Windows 8?

Nothing, 8 is superior in most cases once you install classic shell if you dislike the metro screen. There are tons of under the hood improvements for multithreading and other things.

8 is essentially a straight upgrade if you use Class Shell.

Aero theme, better compatibility, I don't have to install third party software to fix glaring mistakes in the basic UI design, no backwards "natural" scrolling by default (or at all, thankfully).

For strictly gaming purposes, there is no need to upgrade to 8. 7 is still going to be supported for many years. I normally skip every other windows version. They have improved 8 a lot, but when it first came out it was total and complete garbage. And a lot of people still haven't recovered from the shock of how bad windows 8 used to be.
