Is a 37-40" 1080p HDTV practical for PC usage?

I would just get a good monitor if I were you.

I've never liked using a computer on a big TV.

I used a 32" TV as a monitor for a while, I wouldn't want to go any larger than that in a desktop scenario. It felt a little too large at times.

Desktop scenario, 3-4 feet away

That's a terrible idea.

I have a 50 inch flatscreen wall mounted over my 3 lg 22 inch screens. Mainly use the flat screen when im playing games suited for the controller like Assasins Creed, Arkham Origins ect.

if you have the money for a 37-40 inch 1080p hdtv why not also get a standard size monitor and run both.

I have a 55" LED that I run my main PC through and another that is hooked to a 27" LED monitor. Both are 1080p. I do most of my gaming on the big screen. Seeing all of your favorite games, on a big screen, maxed out is just too good to pass up. Desktop monitors are just too small for total immersion imo.

I've said it quite a bit on here, but I would rather play big screen, maxed out settings @ 1080p than a 27" 1440p monitor.

I have a triple 27" monitor setup and a switchbox that connects to my 40" 1080p TV at the foot of my bed. I got two 360 controllers and it's a pretty easy switch whenever I got anyone over.
