Should i update my laptop to windows 8.1?

disables sli so i didnt update my y510p

There were multiple problems with it, which is why I still have yet to download it. If I remember correctly the main issues were the sli issues which was mentioned above (most likely not an issue for your laptop), problems with gpu drivers not working well with it (if yours is integrated, it probably wouldn't be an issue), possible touchscreen issues (if your laptop is touchscreen), and it caused a few games to have weird mouse acceleration. This didn't happen to everyone, but it was enough problems for me to just wait. I heard they fixed some of the issues with it so I'm not sure if these are all cleared up yet or not. All that being said though I know a bunch of people who did upgrade and had no issues whatsoever, so I could just be overly paranoid and there's a strong chance you probably won't have any issues with it.

Yes but I recommend making a full backup (preferably a disc image) as it will make the process allot easier.

I tried twice and on both attempts I had to restore from a backup.

The upgrade to 8.1 is really a lot more like upgrading to a new OS rather than installing a service pack, so downgrading is not as easy. Definitely do an image-based backup before installing 8.1.
