my laptop died, need a new one to run mmo please

#1Dave40kPosted 12/29/2013 4:09:03 AM
My hard drive is busted. I was planning on getting a new laptop in a few months anyway.I'm in Afghanistan for two more months and am worried I may not get the laptop on time. When I return home this will be my wifes laptop and she will use out for mmo such as wow, gw2, ff14, and amateur photography. I would like to be able to run those games on high settings and I would like to pay under $1200. Amazon is probably a good place if they can ship here. Could you link me to some quality laptops on there please?

I've heard good things about the Lenovo. I actually think newegg may be a better place to buy. The issue I'm having is many laptops for gaming are a bit overkill. Since this will really probably only ever do mmorpg for gaming it seems a bit excessive to get a killer expensive machine. If it was for me sure, but after deployment its my wifes laptop and I Ferrell the power will be wasted. That said, how does this laptop look?

I am still very interested in the Lenovo but exploring all options. Thanks for the help

Despite their iffy rep on this board I've always been impressed by Acers gaming laptops.

I've got an almost 2 year old 5560G and I've not had any difficulty running any games at medium in 1080p in the past 6 months and medium on modern get looks way better than the last console gen. It monsters Skyrim at ultra too. So maybe have a look at some of their newer offerings?

I understand the Acer I linked in post 3 has a 1.8CPU but with the turbo boost is it acceptable? Part of me wants to spring for the Lenovo but if the Acer can get by playing mmo on medium to high settings I think my wife and I will be happier. I'm more into gaming than her so I got a desktop I just need to replace her 3 year old vaio which hardly runs wow on low

My brother has a 2 year old $450 Asus laptop that runs WoW surprisingly well, in my opinion at least. He gets a really steady 30 fps at 720p. Not sure what its specs are exactly but I think it's just the HD3000.

As for a $1200 budget, Sager has a few solid choices in the $1000-1100 range and you could get her a nice mouse as well with the extra. Check xoticpc and look for something with a Haswell i7 and the 765m, those are about $990, though you'll need to pay a bit extra for windows. I'm not sure how much an upgrade to a 770m would cost but I'm sure it's within your budget and it's what I'd go with in that range personally.

Not sure the model differences, but the one on Lenovo's website has it listed with SLI 755M and not 750M, but it's $115 more, which would put you right at $1200. Or you can get it with a single 755M for quite a bit cheaper. Also don't know about their shipping.
