Is it normal to be asked to use Teamspeak for MMOs?

With people you've never met before. I recently got a guild invite from someone who said using this was a requirement in his group. Is this normal?

For raiding and rated bgs, absolutely. Voice comms are expected

It's widely expected of most serious progression guilds, but I don't think they require you to actually talk, just be able to listen to directions etc.

Team speak, Ventrilo, Raid Call , and Mumble.
Each guild has their own preferences. But it is mandatory if you plan on doing anything seriously.

what sad is MMO's like WoW have a built in voice chat but nobody ever uses it, and new MMO's like GW2 and FF14 knowing how important voice chat is dont include any forcing us to use 3rd party programs.

It depends. Most guilds will only request you to use voice chat if you're doing a guild event. And even then, you don't need to socialize if that's your aversion. It's mainly for quick communication for important information or directions.

built-in voice chats tend to have big latency problems
using 3rd party servers lets you use servers that are near your geographical location for lower pings, and 3rd parties are able to develop much better programs for voice chat because that's all they work on, not an entire game alongside it

The built in voice chat is absolutely useless compared to a dedicated application.

Absolutely. Part of the fun of an MMO is chatting with guildies over voicechat!

Yes, so you better get a mic and a sexy voice.

Watch out, there might be a girl in the guild.

The Russian girls with broken English are the best. But most of the girls are either whiny girlfriends of male guild members or those mousy gamer girls with infuriatinly whisper quiet voices
