Valdis Story vs. La-Mulana, Which to pick OR any suggestions (metroidvania)

#11KilronPosted 1/1/2014 5:52:03 PM
La Mulana is based more off of The Maze of Galious for the MSX than it is Metroid or Castlevania. I personally prefer the freeware version out of the two, because of all the references to the MSX and old Konami games they were forced to remove for the steam version. It's fun, but difficult by design (intentionally has the same mechanics MoG did, including pressing up to jump and big knockbacks every time you get hit). Free version is worth a shot.

Never played Valdis.

So you're saying these games are trying to be like Castlevania trying to be like Metroid?

Stop using terms you don't understand, makes you look like a derp.

And protip just because other people are stupid and wrong consistently doesn't mean you have to be too, break the cycle.

La-Mulana, at least from my experience, is extremely frustrating due to terrible design choices made for the sake of being "retro". Perhaps the most notable is the fact that you can only save at specific save points, meaning that if you die (and there are things in the game that you'll only know are dangerous when you've been killed by them before) you'll lose all of your progress since the last time you were at a save point. It's a huge waste of the player's time. The only thing I really liked about what I played of it was that the menu sounds reminded me of Mega Man X5.

Do you not realize you can warp to any save point whenever you want? There's no excuse for dying outside of a boss fight unless you're completely incapable of watching your health bar.

So cheap, pick them all up. La Mulana though is incredibly hard, to the point of frustration. I just bought Valdis, no opinions yet.

I'd say Valdis Story. The controls aren't as tight as they could be but they aren't bad. They fixed the biggest issue a while back which was not being able to rebind the guard cancel (can't remember if that's the name of the ability). It used to be tied to the down direction which led to lots of frustration during platforming puzzle sections that have little to no room for error.

Fantastic game and worth it at full price so the sale price is a steal.

La Mulana is a fantastic game, I'd choose it in a heart beat.

I actually had no idea you could do that. Sounds like I should give the game another chance then.

You can't warp between save points until you find the Holy Grail. This is one of the very first items you should find in the game, though, so if you haven't picked it up you should go back and look for it.

Bought Valdis Story, it is actually really fun. However...
There doesn't seem to be a vsync option in the game... so I am trying the nvidia control panel... and it seems to crash, which is highly annoying because this damn game needs a vsync option or something
