What benefits exist to SteamOS compared to Windows?

#1lazycomplifePosted 1/7/2014 7:35:20 PM
Do they expect people to choose SteamOS over Windows, when you can do pretty much anything you want on Windows, including playing games? I don't see the appeal for SteamOS or Steam Machines, personally. I think people are paying more money for less of a product, kind of like what people do for iCrap.

None for the consumer. It's just Valve feeling the pressure from other services, like Origin, so they made an OS that shuts it out.

Oh, in that case, I hope they bring about the end of Origin. That would be pretty sweet.

The whole point is less overhead meaning better performance on all games. Simply put.

PC hardware doesn't need to match console hardware in price when PC gamers save literal thousands from the software they buy.

There is no "selling the product." SteamOS is cometely free. If you're married to windows, you can dual-boot and enjoy the better performance of linux (video drivers, memory management, disk managyment, the list just keeps going on and I have 4% battery.) while in an easy-to-use newbieland (SteamOS) and still have the option to boot into windows to run your old win32 binaries.

Basically, it runs a hell of a lot faster and does more than Windows, as it is sitting on plenty much a full debian install. Not my distro of choice, but debian aint horrid.

SteamOS is optimized to be used with a controller. But really it was just to be free.

And it'll probably support origin and other steam competitors as soon as they release Linux clients.

SteamOS is a lifeboat for Valve of sorts and an incentive for developers to support non-Windows OSes. It's not about how well it does right now, just like Steam itself wasn't about how well it did back when it was garbage you had to install to play HL2. It's about getting the foot in the door
