With too many different companies making the platform, causing too much fragmentation in the market.

Will this be different? The platform already has tons of games, but they are already available on regular PCs...

Isn't the main point of a Steam Box to make PC games more available to casual COD-type gamers? If they have to choose between multiple different types of the platform, and not all games will run on every system, there doesn't really seem to be an advantage.

After all, can't I just connect my gaming laptop to my computer, and have the same experience with Big Picture Mode?

Obviously, I'm missing something here. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Beyond it being a smaller form factor, I'm really not seeing the point myself.

I think it's great that there will be pre-built "Gaming PC's" that will easily fit in the living room, but in the end it's still a PC that has all of the same things that go along with it (good and bad) of non Steam Machines.

I'm not seeing how this is going to turn a bunch of people away from consoles and on to PC Gaming because it's really not solving any of the "problems" that those people have with PC's. I guess it has much more to do with Valve wanting Windows to go away than it does any kind of attempted conversion of console people to PC's.

I do have to say that with the 3D0, the differences between the consoles constructed by different manufacturers were aesthetic, not architectural. An FZ-1 performed the same as one of the original models, it just looked different, making them functionally no different than the various "new" iterations or re-designs of any other console, like the PSX, PS2, PS3, Wii, or 360.

Ah the 3DO.

I had a friend who bought every console there was. He paid $500 for a 3DO, and only bought one game for it.

Hopefully the Steambox, won't go down in history quite so badly.

I think I heard a rumor yesterday that Valve will be packaging an Occulus Rift with the Steam Machines in the near future.

My friend has never gamed on PC and was planning on getting an Xbox One but he is fascinated with the Rift. If they package the Steam Box, New Controller, and Rift that's an insanely appealing package.

So, by your logic TC, PCs should have died out looooooooong ago what with the dozens of companies that sell their own spin on it. HP, Lenovo, Dell, Asus, Compaq, Gigabyte, Hitachi, Toshiba, Sony, System76, Vizio, MDG, Puget, Zenith, Jetta, hell even Hyundai and Mitsubishi are in on the action, not to mention my personal favorite (for obvious reasons) Wyse Tech.
