Why would anyone want a Steam Machine? It's a gaming PC with a lot less software

It's not steam only. Any linux game will work.

But you can and should install windows.

How much does it cost to install windows though on a Steam Machine?

Windows costs the same regardless of the type of hardware you install it on, so it doesn't matter whether you're installing it on a Steam Machine or a regular PC. Again though, a Steam Machine is a regular PC.
See http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/os/#sort=a4&b=64 for the cost of Windows.

Games need to be ported to Steam OS, recent and future EA releases wont be playable because it's Steam only, etc.

Why would anyone get one and not just a gaming PC?

You don't understand how it works do you?

It makes absolutely no difference when it comes to comparing a PC with a console.
That said, personally I would go for Windows 8.1 just because it's the most "futureproof" option.

What's hard to understand about installing Windows on a PC?

1. **** EA.

2. A STEAM MACHINE IS A REGULAR RIG THAT COMES STANDARD WITH STEAM OS THAT CAN PLAY GAMES ON STEAM. That's all it is. If the purchaser wants to play other games on Windows or or Linux OS, they can just install those as well into the damn rig.

Don't get why people are getting confused. A steam machine is just a PC in a small case with Steam OS instead of windows. Stick a windows disk in a "steam machine" and install windows and you have a regular old PC. It's nothing special outside the nifty cases some of them use.

It's just an attempt to reinvigorate the floundering pre-built market and bring in some of the console gaming crowd by dumbing down the OS by making it more plug and play.

EA makes worthwhile PC games?

Are you trying to start rumors?

EA makes nothing.

In recent years people have been focusing almost exclusively on the publishers. In the past, it used to be the developers that people looked at when trying to gauge whether a game will be good or not, the publishers were just that, publishers.

Of course it is true that publishers now play a bigger role than before. They are more involved with the design of the game, and since a triple A game nowadays takes millions to make, they are the one that finance them. This does create a problem. Studios can no longer make their games independent on their own budget. The handful who can (Valve, Blizzard, The guys at Rockstar in a way) seem to clearly benefit from making things on their own terms.

Nevertheless I feel that it is still the developer who has to make the game, and some developers deserve some love regardless of who is paying for development.

Also, in response to the topic: Accessibility.
