Should I take a risk and get this capture card?

What drew me in was being able to use USB 3.0 and game on the same monitor with no lag, but then I saw that the verified chipsets are Intel native, Renesas, and Fresco.

My build's not Intel based and I have no idea how to check if it has Renesas or Fresco.

A 3TB hard drive is cheaper.

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A97_R20/#specifications suggests your USB 3.0 controller is ASMedia, not Renesas or Fresco.

What if my case has two USB 3.0 ports in the front? Or would it still be a no-go?

I don't think it makes a difference where your ports are, it's a USB 3.0 device and it should just work on any USB 3.0 controller. What they're saying is that they've tested it on Intel, Renesas and Fresco controllers, that doesn't mean it won't work on your Asmedia controller.
