i7 4770k reporting wrong temps

#1Treason686Posted 1/16/2014 11:21:59 PM
Doing some stress testing on my build with no OC yet.

i7 4770k
ASRock Fatlity Killer Z87
Hyper 212 HSF

Temp monitoring programs report 25C (Probably wrong), and the instant I start Prime the CPU reports 100C. No exaggeration, the second I hit start and CPU usage goes to 100 percent, every temp monitoring utility tells me the CPU is at 100C.

I've updated the BIOS to the latest version, but I'm not sure what else to do. Has anyone had this issue?

To add, the second I turn Prime off, it instantly goes back to around 35C.

I think the initial readings are correct, but when the CPU goes to full load, temps are incorrect, which is why I'm seeing 35C after running Prime, instead of 25C.

You probably mounted it wrong(no thermal paste, too much, loose bracket. did you connect the fan/s). Definitely check if the 212 is securely mounted, perhaps the the nuts on the back plate came loose. The 212 mounting system is kind of annoying so you might have to fiddle with it a bit to get it snug.

I just installed an A70 on a 4770k and the temps were only about 58C stock(IBT MAX) with room temp at 25C.

It's definitely possible it was a poor mount... Instantaneous temp changes of 75 degrees seems strange though.

What program are you using to monitor the temps? For example if you're using AI Suite then it's going to be wrong. AI Suite gives me warnings on the regular about my mobo and cpu being -128 C which obviously it isn't. I just ignore it now because other temp monitoring programs have verified the real temps. I'm going to eventually wipe AI suite, I just haven't gotten around to it yet though. Just my 2.

If you have a poor mount/seating, I don't think a 75C change out of the realm of possibility when you go from idle to ohgodwhy levels of use. Temp changes for CPU are pretty near instant as well, so that isn't surprising either.

sounds normal for haswells if its OC'd TURBO mode counts.

remember you're using prime which is designed to stress test your CPU and will heat it up almost instantly.

I do know some z87 boards had weird mounting issues with brackets from the cooler that supported multiple sockets,

Interesting post, I have a new build with an I7 4770k and a l337 drone MB and am getting wrong temps reported through speedfan. While I'm nowhere's near the danger zone speedfan is reporting in the low 20s while CPUID shows mid30s. I'm curious as to whats up with that, especially since I really dig speedfan.

try this and see if your temps are reading normally:
